There is a time in the experience of every family when a loved one dies. Sometimes it has been expected because of age or terminal illness. At another time it may happen because of tragic circumstances. At such times there is a need for someone to stand with them. As a minister, I have tried to be there. It has been a sacred privilege to be trusted with the deepest emotions of those who hurt when grief is fresh.

Those of us who serve in caring professions can do much good or harm by the way we respond to a call for help, whether that plea is vocal or silent. Professionalism must be undergirded by genuine compassion. Our attitude may go a long way in providing closure as we help in dealing with the loss.

These are stories of real people, which deal with both heartbreak and hope, as seen through the eyes of one who has walked with numerous individuals and families "through the valley of the shadow of death."
